Laptop Buying Guide 2023- Which Laptop Is Best For You?

With laptops becoming more popular there are many options to choose from when buying a laptop. It can becoming confusing and overwhelming to choose a new laptop. In this laptop buying guide 2023 I will be giving you some buying tips as well as discussing some good laptops so you can decide which laptop is best for your needs.

What To Consider When Buying A Laptop

There are many things to consider when buying a laptop such your budget, what type of laptop you want, the features you need and much more. I’m going to go over 5 things you should consider when buying a laptop to help you get an idea of what you should consider before choosing a laptop.

  1. Your Budget Your budget is important when buying a laptop as you need to know what your budget is and how much you want to spend on a laptop. Consider how much money you want to spend and the reasons for your chosen amount. Keep this in mind while you are shopping for a laptop, stick to it and don’t go over your budget unless you absolutely have to.
  2. The Type Of Laptop You Want There are many different types of laptops out there and it’s important to know the type of laptop you want. To decide this consider what the purpose of your new laptop is and what you will be using it most for. There are budget laptops, work laptops, gaming laptops and much more. Laptops are priced according to their quality, inclusions, specifications and type. So make sure you know the type of laptop you want so you can shop around accordingly for a laptop of that type.
  3. Size & Screen Quality The size of a laptop is important and this something you should know when you are buying a laptop. Laptops are known for their portability and all laptops are portable but there are laptops designed to make portability easier. If you want something that is easy to take with you consider an ultra book which is a laptop with a smaller screen size that is thin and lightweight. Screen quality is also important as you will probably spending a lot of time on your laptop so make sure to look for a laptop with a screen that is clear, bright and easy on the eyes. Glossy screens reflect light that is around you so this is something that you should be aware of and there also laptops with touchscreens which could be a good option for you if you like using devices with touchscreens. If you are going to be watching a lot of videos or doing a lot of multimedia tasks you will need a laptop with a good screen resolution to. I recommend a 1920×1080 Full HD display for these purposes which will give you great image quality and a good view of your open windows and programs.
  4. RAM & Storage RAM stands for Random Access Memory and the more RAM you have in your laptop the faster it will be and the more software and applications you can run at the same time. RAM is key for multitasking and if you are going to be doing a lot of multitasking you are going to need a good amount of RAM. These days the minimum amount of RAM you can get in a laptop is 4GB which is good if you are not going to be multitasking or doing a lot of heavy tasks such as powerful software and gaming. But if you are going to be doing a lot of multitasking, playing a lot of games and running a lot of powerful software you will need at least 8GB of RAM or more. Storage is also important and this refers to the amount of space you will have on your Hardrive. You need to consider the type of storage you want which will be either a Hard Disk Drive or a Solid State Drive. HDDs are what all laptops and computers used to have back in the day but now SSDs are becoming more popular. HDDs are nosier and slower but will still allow you to doing all your daily computer needs whereas SSDs are faster, quieter and will allow you to do more tasks faster but are more expensive. Consider your needs and how you will be using your laptop before deciding which type of storage you want. You also need to decide how much storage space you need and the more you need the more expensive it will be. Storage space ranges from 64GB to 1TB or more and you should choose the amount that suits you depending on how many programs and applications you will be installing, how you will be using your laptop and the types of files you will be using. The more software and files you will be using and the larger they are the more storage you will need so base your storage decisions around this.
  5. Battery Life & Connectivity Battery life is important when buying a laptop especially if you are going to be using it a lot or taking it with you often you will need a laptop with good battery life. The battery life of a laptop is measured in Watt Hours or Milliamp Hours and the bigger the number the longer the battery will last. Connectivity is also important with your laptop because laptops usually have a lot of connectivity features such as USB ports, HDMI ports, DVD drives, SD card slots and much more. Consider what connectivity features you will need and look for a laptop that has them. All laptops come with USB ports but you will need to make sure the laptop you are buying has all the connectivity features you need so make sure to take the time to check the connectivity features of the laptops you look at while shopping around for a laptop.

Laptop Buying Tips

Now that you know what to consider when buying a laptop there are some other important things you need to be aware of such as specifications, operating systems, laptop brands, laptop prices and much more. I’m going to go over 10 laptop buying tips that will help you choose the right laptop for you.

1. Base Your Purchasing Decisions Around Your Needs Laptop Collage

When buying a laptop you should never choose a laptop just because it looks nice or has high quality features you might not need. You should always consider what you need out of a laptop before buying it and don’t spend money on expensive laptops if you don’t need to.

Your laptop purchasing decisions should based around your needs and how you are going to be using your laptop so that you don’t spend too much money and so that you choose the laptop that is right for you.

2. Take The Time T0 Shop Around

When buying a laptop you should take the time to shop around instead of just choosing something from the latest deals. It’s ok to look at the latest laptops that are on sale but you should not buy one straight away. Look around in electrical stores and other stores that sell laptops as well as online to find the best laptop for the lowest price.

You should also take advantage of seasonal deals like EOFY sales, Black Friday deals and Christmas sales to get some really good deals on laptops and other technology. Never rush into buying a laptop without considering your needs, the options available and without taking the time to shop around and explore the range of laptops and deals available.

3. Make Sure You Get Warranty

When you buy something such as a phone, laptop or other electronic item you can get warranty with it. Many laptops comes with warranty but there are some that don’t. Warranty is important because if your laptop breaks or stops working after you buy it you can return to it for repair, replacement or get your money refunded free of charge.

But if your laptop does not come with warranty you will not be able to do this and you could end up loosing a lot of money as well as have to spend a more money on another laptop. But getting a laptop with warranty can help you avoid this problem and save you a lot of money.

Laptops that come with warranty usually have at least 12 months warranty but some laptops have more than 12 months warranty. Always check if the laptop you are buying comes with warranty and always get a laptop that comes with warranty especially if it is an expensive laptop. This way you can get any issues sorted out free of charge during the warranty period without having to worry about loosing a lot of money.

4. Choose An Operating System

The operating system is the environment which runs all files and software on your computer and allows you to use it. There are 4 main operating systems that laptops runs which are Windows, MacOS, Linux and Chrome OS. They all have differences and effect what kind of software you can use and what kind of hardware you get on your laptop. Computer Operating Systems

Here is a basic run down of each

Windows Windows is made by Microsoft and is one of the most popular operating systems on the market. It is most known for it’s Microsoft software and apps therefore if you want to use Microsoft software or apps you will need to choose a Windows laptop.

There are hundreds of Windows laptops out there and there are more Windows laptops to choose from than any other OS. Windows laptops cost from $200 up to thousands of dollars depending on the laptop you choose.

MacOS MacOS is made by Apple and is also one of the most popular operating systems on the market. It’s a big competitor to Windows and is a good option if you don’t like other operating systems. MacOS is a bit more beginner friendly than Windows but is run only on Apple hardware and your options are limited to Macbooks.

It is quite different to Windows but it is still a really great operating system. It’s a good choice if you want to use Apple software and have apple devices like iPhones and iPads. Macbooks cost from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars depending on the laptop you choose.

Linux Linux is a good and stable operating system that is different from Windows and MacOS and has a learning curve with it. It runs well, is quite secure and is not targeted by viruses and malware very often. If you choose Linux you can run it on just about any laptop no matter the hardware but you won’t be able to use Microsoft software, Adobe software or other popular software.

But there are many free alternatives you can use that are quite good. There are hundreds of distributions of Linux to choose from and they can be quite interesting. Linux is free to download and install yourself but if you want a laptop with it already installed it will cost a few hundred dollars depending on the laptop you choose.

Chrome OS Chrome OS is an operating system made by Google that comes on Chrome laptops called Chromebooks. It is becoming more popular especially with cheap laptops and in schools. Chrome OS is lightweight and most things are done in a web browser. It is also the cheapest but least powerful operating system that you can get.

Microsoft software, Adobe software and many other programs and apps that are compatible with other operating systems won’t run as Chrome OS is based on Google Apps and you need to be connected to the internet and use your Google account to sigh in. It’s a good choice if you are on a tight budget and can do most things in a web browser. Chromebooks cost from $15o up to a few hundred dollars depending on the laptop you choose.

Now that you have a basic understanding of operating systems you should be able to decide which one is right for you. When choosing an operating system consider your needs and what type of software and apps you want to use. Choose the operating system that you are already familiar with or the one that allows you to use the software and apps you want to use.

5. Know About Laptop Brands

There are many different brands to choose from when buying a laptop but some brands are cheaper than others. Make sure you always choose a well known and trustworthy brand that has a good reputation. Never buy a sketchy looking brand or weird brands from other countries you have never heard of.

Your laptop is only as good as the company that makes it and if it’s a good and trustworthy manufacturer you will get a good quality laptop. Support is also very important and is a part of what makes a brand worth buying. Well known and reputable brands like Acer, Apple, Dell, Asus, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Alienware and many others all make good quality laptops and have good support as well.

Choose a brand that you like and is in your budget but just make sure it is one of the well know and reputable brands. The cost of your laptop will depend on the brand and type of laptop you choose.

6. Consider DDR RAM

DDR is a different type of RAM from regular RAM. DDR stands for Double Date Rate and will have a number next to it. DDR3 is older and less common these days because it is mostly found in older laptops. DDR4 RAM is faster and is what you want to have in your laptop. Most laptops these day have DDR4 RAM but is still important to check and make sure it has DDR4 RAM before you buy it.

7. Decide If You Need A Webcam

Many laptops come with a built in laptop and this is something you should decide if you want before you buy a laptop. Some laptops don’t have a built in webcam so it’s important to know if you need one before you choose a laptop. Webcams are mainly used for things like Zoom, Skype and videos calls but sometimes can be used for other things like taking selfies or participating in certain jobs like user testing. Webcam On Computer Screen

A lot of laptops have decent quality webcams but some laptops have low quality webcams so be sure to check the quality of the webcam on the laptop before buying it. A lot of laptops have 720p webcams which are decent but if you are going to be using it a lot of Zoom, Skype or video calls I recommend getting a laptop with a HD 1080p webcam.

If you don’t need to a webcam and you know you won’t have any use for one it’s ok to overlook this feature but make sure you know if you want a webcam or not so you can choose laptop that suits your needs.

8. Understand Laptop Specifications

Specifications are a list of the features and type of hardware included with your laptop. This is something you will see when looking at laptops and you should understand the specifications so you know what features and hardware are included with your laptop. Laptop Features & Design

Here is a basic run down of specifications and the most important components to look out for

CPU CPU stands for Central Processing Unit and it is the brains of your laptop. The type of CPU you get will have a big impact on performance and how your laptop runs. There are many CPU’s available in many different laptops such as Apple M1 and Apple M2 which are found in Macbooks and Intel and AMD which there are many different types of and are found in Windows laptops and some other laptops.

If you need a powerful laptop get a more expensive laptop with a good quality CPU but if you need a laptop with less power for light to moderate usage a cheaper laptop with cheaper CPU will be fine.

RAM RAM stands for Random Access Memory and the more RAM your laptop has the faster it is and the better it runs when multitasking. The minimum amount of EAM in laptops these days is 4GB but I recommend 8GB which is enough for the average user.

But if you are going to be gaming or doing a lot of other heavy tasks I recommend you get a laptop with more RAM like 16GB or more so it will run better and it is a requirement for some games as well.

Storage Your laptop’s storage will be either a Hard Disk Drive or a Solid State Drive. This is where all of your files, software and data are stored. Hard Disk Drives are nosier and slower but are cheaper. They were what was used back in the day but are becoming less common now.

Solid State Drives are faster and quieter but are more expensive. They are becoming more common these days as a lot of laptops are made with SSD’s instead of HDD’s. Solid State Drives have less space than Hard Disk Drives but are better and still have enough space for the average user.

I recommend you get a laptop with a Solid State Drive if you have the money and don’t need a lot of storage space because it is better quality and you will have a much faster laptop.

Display The display refers to the screen of your laptop and how many pixels it has. The more pixel it has the more content you can fit on screen and the sharper it will look. Some laptops have a 1366×768 displays which is a lower quality display found in some budget laptops. But I recommend you look for a laptop with a 1920×1080 display which is also known as a Full HD display or a 1080p display.

Some high end laptops have even better displays than this with more pixels and look even better but they are expensive and use more battery. For most people a 1080p display will be fine and that is what I recommend you look for when choosing a laptop.

Some laptops also have a touchscreen which some people like but it is not necessary to have. Unless you are buying a 2 in 1 laptop that isn’t something you will need to worry about too much as there is not really much benefit from having a touchscreen unless you like touchscreens and want one. If you are buying a regular laptop you don’t really need a touchscreen and I recommend you buy a laptop without a touchscreen to save money.

Graphic Card The graphics card is also known as the Graphics Processing Unit or GPU and is sometimes called a video card. It is a hardware component and type of display adaptor that is installed in your laptop that is responsible for displaying high quality images on the screen.

A high quality graphics card is important if you are playing games, creating 3D objects or doing a lot of high resolution video editing. If that’s the case you will need a laptop with a high end graphics card such as RTX 4070 and AMD Radeon RX 7000.

But if you are not doing any of the heavy tasks I mentioned and are only doing things like web browsing, office work and other light to moderate tasks a low end or mid range graphics card will be fine. I recommend you choose a laptop with the graphics card that is designed for the purpose you will be using your laptop for.

Ports & Connectivity All laptops have some form of ports on them which are used to connect devices and accessories to your laptops. If you laptop has a small amount of ports you might not be able to connect all the things you want to use with your laptop. For example common ports found on laptops are USB ports, HDMI ports, Ethernet ports, headphone jacks, and SD Card slots.

Connectivity features refer to WiFi and Bluetooth. WiFi allows you to connect to the internet wirelessly with no cables as long as you are in range of a router or modem. Bluetooth allows you to connect to phones, tablets, laptops and other devices that have Bluetooth on them wirelessly with no cables and you send and receive files between these devices over Bluetooth.

Always make sure you check and know what ports and connectivity features come with the laptop you are buying so you will be able to connect and use the features and accessories you want to use with your laptop.

Now that you know the basics about laptop specifications you should be able to choose a laptop that suits your needs. Make sure you take the time to consider what features and hardware you need on your laptop and take the time took at the specifications of the laptops you see when you are shopping around so you can buy the laptop that suits your needs.

9. Consider A 2 In 1 Laptop

2 In 1 laptops are laptops that can be used as a laptop or a tablet depending on what you choose to use it as. They are hybrid laptops with touchscreens that come in 2 styles. One style allows you to completely detach the screen from the laptop and use it as a tablet and the other style is called convertible laptops where the hinges bend back 360 degrees so you can easily change between laptop and tablet mode.

2 In 1 laptops are great if you want to use it as tablet and work really well this way but are also good in laptop mode. However if you don’t want to use your laptop as tablet there is not much point in getting a 2 in 1 laptop. I recommend you get a 2 In 1 laptop if you want to use your laptop as a tablet or if you want a laptop that is easy to take with you. But if that’s not the case I recommend you get a regular laptop instead.

10. Save Money With Older And Refurbished Laptops

Buying older laptops or refurbished laptops can save you a lot of money as lot of them are still really good and can still be used fine today. Older laptops like the Acer Aspire ES 15 and the Lenovo Ideapad 300 15ISK are older laptops that were made a few years ago but still work fine and you can save a lot of money buying older laptops like this. Multiple Laptops

The best place to find older laptops like this is online as a lot of them are no longer available in store but can still be found quite often online. A similar concept applies to refurbished laptops because you can get some really good laptops in great condition that have been restored to perfect working order at a low price.

Even some high end laptops as well as some of the new and latest laptops can sometimes be found refurbished and at a great price that can save you hundred of dollars. The best place to find refurbished laptops like this is online as there are more to choose from and even better deals.

I recommend you consider getting an older laptop or a refurbished laptop if you don’t have a lot of money to spend or if you want a good laptop at a low price.

If you are interested in learning more about older and refurbished laptops there are 2 laptops I recommend you start with which are the Acer Aspire ES15 and the Lenovo Ideapad 300 15ISK. I have full reviews of both of these laptops where you can learn more about them.

Which Laptop Should I Choose?

Now that you know what to consider when buying a laptop as well as other laptop buying tips and you have seen some examples of the types of laptops available on the market I want to go over which laptop you should choose and give you some advice to help you decide the right laptop for you.

When choosing a laptop it is important to choose one that fits your needs for example if you need high speed look for a laptop with a good CPU. If you need a laptop for gaming look for a laptop with good graphics and performance that can handle a lot of gaming and heavy tasks.

Your purchasing decisions should be based around your needs and you should never buy a laptop because it looks nice or has advanced features that you may never use. Always consider your needs and choose the laptop that has the hardware and features you need based on how you are going to be using the laptop.

Another important note is to not buy the laptop the sales person says you should buy because he thinks it’s the best one. A lot of sales people will do this to try and sell you an expensive laptop that you don’t want or need so they can make a lot of money. It’s important to be aware of this so you don’t spend too much money on a laptop.

You should also never buy the laptop your friends or family have just because they have it. You should buy the laptop you want that suits your needs and not let anyone pressure you into buying a laptop you don’t really want or need. The laptop you buy will be yours so it’s important that you are going to be happy with it.

It’s ok to ask sales people as well as your friends and family for help or advice but make sure you go with the laptop you want to buy that you know suits your needs. Ultimately the decision is yours but you should take the time to consider your budget, needs and options as well as shop around for good deals so you will be happy with your new laptop and so you can decide which laptop is right for you.

Conclusion

In conclusion buying a laptop is something many people do but it doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task. If you take the time to consider your budget, needs and options as well as shop around for good deals you will be able to find a good laptop that suits your needs.

There are many things to consider when buying a laptop such as your budget, the type of laptop you want, screen size and quality, battery life, connectivity and much more. There are also other important things you should be aware of such as basing your purchasing decisions on your needs, making sure you get warranty, choosing an operating system, understanding laptop specifications, saving money with older and refurbished laptops and much more.

Ultimately the decision is yours but you need to be happy with the laptop you buy. Don’t be afraid to ask for help but remember to always go with the laptop that is right for you.
